Durham Cathedral Open Treasure
Design and Management
Durham Cathedral Open Treasure is an award-winning, contemporary experience set within a 900-year-old cathedral. ‘Open Treasure’ explores the story of St Cuthbert and the spread of early Christianity, monastic life at the Priory and cathedral life post-reformation across four unique architectural spaces in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Studio MB’s challenge was to interpret the story of the monastery, the cathedral and its many treasures, which include St Cuthbert’s 698AD coffin, with visitors journeying through a series of historic rooms from the enormous 13th century Monks’ Dormitory, to a new ‘airlocked’ collections gallery, ending in the original stone vaulted Great Kitchen.
Our designs had to capture the appropriate reverence and gravitas whilst remaining accessible to existing and new audiences. Visitors can feel the atmosphere of spirituality all around them through exploring the fascinating life and times story of Durham Cathedral.
Studio MB was responsible for exhibition and interpretive design, graphic design, creative direction of AV hardware and software design, project management and tender management.
