To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Durham County Council invited Studio MB to design an exhibition within their Gala Theatre auditorium, to commemorate their own ‘Band of Brothers’ – the Durham Light Infantry.
Studio MB proposed instead to create a play in eight acts, where the audience would be led on an immersive journey through a series of simple sets and theatre backdrops. A journey that would take them from volunteers, through basic training to the front line. The audience would endure the conditions of the trench, the bombardment of shells and a dawn attack on enemy lines, before visiting a field hospital and returning home to a life that could never be the same again.
The team at Studio MB were responsible for all design and implementation stages for this project, from inception to completion, including research, narrative planning, content development, concept design, developed design and technical design, graphic design, AV software and AV hardware design, lighting design, actor performance direction, script and copy writing, illustration, plus procurement, project management and contract administration.

"I have dried the tears from my eyes, but the hairs on the back of my neck are still standing tall. I had read some good reviews about the event after it started running last week, but they didn’t (or couldn’t) prepare me for what I was about to experience. It is just that – not a show, not a play or an exhibition, but an experience, and one like no other I have had before."
