Durham County Council
Gala Theatre Trench Experience
1916: No Turning Back
Design and Build
To mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, Durham County Council invited Studio MB to design an exhibition within their Gala Theatre auditorium, to commemorate their own ‘Band of Brothers’ - the Durham Light Infantry.
Studio MB proposed instead to create a promenade theatre play in eight acts, where the audience would be led on an immersive journey through a series of simple sets and theatre backdrops. A journey that would take them as volunteers, through basic training to the front line. Participants would endure the conditions of the trench, the bombardment of shells and a dawn attack on enemy lines, before visiting a field hospital and returning 'home' to a life never to be the same again.
The show ran for six weeks in the Summer of 2016 and was performed eight times a day, receiving very positive reviews and BBC news coverage.
Studio MB provided creative direction for the experience from concept through to delivery as as design and build service.
