Contract: Permanent
Salary: £30,000 – £36,000 per annum, depending on experience

About the Role:

Award-winning visitor destination designers Studio MB are looking for an ambitious Senior Exhibition Designer with vivid imagination and creative flair – a designer who wants to create inspiring, involving and informing environments for galleries and exhibitions within museums, brand homes, science centres and heritage attractions.
The role will be based in our studio, and we are seeking an applicant with at least 5 years’ experience working in exhibition design or a related field (e.g., architecture, interior design, or interior architecture).
Award-winning visitor destination designers Studio MB are looking for an ambitious Senior Exhibition Designer with vivid imagination and creative flair – a designer who wants to create inspiring, involving and informing environments for galleries and exhibitions within museums, brand homes, science centres and heritage attractions.
The role will be studio based, and we are seeking an applicant with at least 5 years’ experience working in exhibition design or a related field (e.g., architecture, interior design, or interior architecture).
While you will have a specialism (Exhibition and/or Interior design) at which you excel, your role will also include being asked to think and work across all design disciplines to assist in the production of physical and digital experiences. The person must be able to work with direction from more senior creative personnel within the studio, with strong listening skills and the ability to interact at a variety of stages of the creative process, from ideation, production, to implementation. We want you to be fully engaged in each stage of the design and delivery process - taking ownership of your ideas and look after them all the way through from concept creation at tender to on-site completion.
Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Working both individually and collaboratively with the Design Directors, Creative Director, and the wider studio team to progress projects from inception to completion.• Working with the Creative Director and Design Directors to generate creative concepts for tenders/pitches for new business and on-going projects.• Taking a brief and working to client and Creative Director/Design Director requirements.• Producing presentations for clients that are clear and persuasive.• When required, coordinating the studio team to meet project needs efficiently and within deadlines.• Undertaking co-ordination on projects with the wider design and client team, for example architects, access consultants, curators, AV hardware, AV software, lighting design, contractors, and installation teams.• Producing accurate and comprehensive CAD drawings with a good grounding in the principles of line-weights, hatches, and typical protocols, following Studio MB drawing standards, compiling project samples, managing schedules and specifying products, materials, and finishes.• Producing high quality realistic 3D renders of spaces.• Articulating your thoughts clearly and succinctly through hand drawings and presenting your ideas succinctly both internally and to clients.• Writing coherent copy.• Carrying out tasks relating to CDM 2015 regulations and requirements.• Attending site visits (including during project installation), contractor/workshop quality control visits, meetings and client presentations as required, both in person and online. Regular travel within the UK and sometimes trips abroad are expected.• Managing a budget throughout the design process.• Overseeing in-house content research as required.• Recording notes and minute-taking.• Delegating to more junior team members and contributing to their professional development.• Ensuring that sustainability and accessibility are rooted in all aspects of designs.• Assisting with other studio tasks and projects from time to time as required.
Studio MB is located in Edinburgh. Due to the collaborative nature of our work, your presence working in the studio is essential.
About You:
Essential:
- Educated to degree standard in exhibition design, interior design, architecture, interior architecture, product design, or related subject.
- At least 5 years’ relevant design experience in museums, heritage destinations, brand homes and/or experiential environments.
- Ability to develop innovative ideas and solutions and to communicate those quickly and effectively.
- Knowledge of relevant working practices, guidelines, and regulations (including CDM 2015), industry technologies, sustainability, finishes and materials.
- Strong software skills and working knowledge of design software including Vectorworks 2D +3D, SketchUp Pro, Twin Motion, Adobe Creative Cloud suite including Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator, Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, and Teams.
- Strong presentation skills both visual and verbal.
- Experience in creating accurate 3D models.
- Experience in creating and managing technical drawings and related information for all stages of a project.
- Able to work independently and as part of the larger design team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills - visual, written and verbal.
- Strong organisational, time management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to take on board and implement feedback.
- Able to work with rigorous attention to detail, consistency, and accuracy.
- Able and willing to work flexibly in support of the company and be comfortable with travel and routinely shifting demands and priorities.
- Pro-active ‘can do’ approach.
Desirable:
- Experience working in design for museum and heritage environments with demanding display and conservation requirements.
- Experience working with Adobe After Effects and or other animation and video editing software.
- Experience working in design for retail spaces, bar, or café spaces.
- A broad understanding of not just your own professional niche but the wider fields of art, design, culture etc.
- Experience working with different sub-contractors on design fit-outs integrating audio visual elements and technology.
- Lighting design, interior design, or architectural design experience.
- BIM experience.
- Full clean UK Driving Licence.
